Ottawa, KS – Communities In Schools (CIS) of Mid-America is pleased to announce it has received a donation from the Nancy and Wint Winter Charitable Fund through the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation in the amount of $175,000. The funds will be used to support the CIS program at Ottawa High School.
The Nancy and Wint Winter Charitable Trust represents many years of hard work and dedication by Wint Winter, Sr., who died in 2013, and Nancy Winter, a current resident of Olathe, KS. Wint was a longtime Ottawa resident, moving there with his bride in 1958 to join the law office of Basil W. Kelsey which later became known as Kelsey and Winter. He became a judge in Franklin County District Court, the youngest judge in Kansas history. Winter went on to be elected to the Kansas Senate in 1968 where he served until 1980; representing Franklin, Douglas, Anderson, Osage, and Miami counties. While serving in the Senate, Winter was a champion for education. Winter also served as chairman of Peoples Inc., and had numerous other business interests; among them real estate, nursery production, oil production, restaurants and community banking in Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Mississippi, Nebraska and other states.
Communities In Schools is the nation’s largest and most effective organization dedicated to keeping kids in school and helping them to succeed in life. CIS of Mid-America provides support services to more than 35,000 students attending schools in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Oklahoma.
Kids can come to school with great teachers, but if they are poorly clothed or have a bad family situation, they are not receptive to learning that day. Children have to be treated holistically to solve these issues.CIS National Board Chair Elaine Wynn
CIS of Mid-America focuses its work exclusively inside K-12 schools, connecting at-risk students with community resources – such as food, clothing, school supplies and medical care – to help remove barriers to their academic success. In Ottawa, CIS of Mid-America provides services in Ottawa High School and Ottawa Middle School.
