Parsons, KS – At the start of this school year, Communities In Schools (CIS) of Mid-America responded to meet local students’ needs by expanding its services to support students attending Parsons Middle School. CIS of Mid-America, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, focuses its work in schools and beyond, connecting at-risk students with community resources – such as food, clothing, school supplies and medical care – to help remove barriers to their academic success.
“Communities In Schools of Mid-America is excited to have Parsons Middle School join our network. We believe the expansion of CIS supports and services will enhance student success by surrounding them with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life – the mission and groundwork we impart within each of our schools,” said Rachel Harrington, CIS of Mid-America Field Director. “Thank you to all involved for assisting in this process so that students may reach their greatest potential.”
Parsons Middle School is the second school in the town to join the CIS of Mid-America network. In August 2013, Parsons High School welcomed the CIS of Mid-America program. Over the past eight years, students attending Parsons High School have benefitted from the supports offered by the program. Brook Hopper currently serves as the CIS of Mid-America Site Coordinator at Parsons High School.
Susan Hill, Site Coordinator at Parsons Middle School, added, “I have been a resident of Parsons since 2015. I combine personal experience with a background in sociology, psychology, at-risk education and community development to help students overcome barriers in their own lives and reach the goals set for themselves. Every day I think about how differently my own life might have looked if there had been a CIS in my schools. I absolutely LOVE being the link between caring and compassionate community members and the kids that need them the most.”
