Communities In Schools of Mid-America is part of the nation's largest organization dedicated to keeping kids in school and helping them succeed. Last year, we provided support in over 50 schools, helping more than 35,000 young people and providing case-managed services to nearly 3,500 students. Below are a few of the stories of student who we helped this past year:

  • Darren* had issues with his behavior, often getting into fights and being sent to the Principal's office. His CIS Site Coordinator helped him learn to manage his anger. School administrators report a stark improvement in his behavior.
  • Judy*, a fifth grader, was struggling with the grief of the death of her mother. Her CIS Site Coordinator brought in a grief counselor to help Judy. She is now able to focus on her schoolwork and is feeling more hopeful about the future.
  • Sara's* GPA was below a 1.0 and she felt hopeless to change it, let alone graduate. Her CIS Site Coordinator connected Sara with an after school tutor, provided her with an incentive to improve her grades, and checked in with her daily to hold her accountable. Sara brought her grades up and now has good study habits.
  • Joe* was sleeping on the floor as his family could not afford a bed. The CIS Site Coordinator worked with a local furniture store to provide Joe with a new mattress and bed.
  • Kelly* and her brother were living in a homeless shelter with their parents. The CIS Site Coordinator connected the family with a temporary housing situation and basic needs. They then worked with the parents to remove barriers (such as transportation) preventing them from finding employment. The family is now in their own home and financially stable and the students are doing well in school.
  • Noah's* mother was recently incarcerated, and he was struggling to focus in school because of this. The CIS Site Coordinator invited Noah to join a small group that they led, focused on helping students of incarcerated parents. Noah learned that he wasn't alone and formed new friendships. This helped alleviate the sadness he felt over his mother, and he is now better able to concentrate on school.

We know that you care for the youth in our community. Please join us by supporting The 6th Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser. By becoming a sponsor, you are directly helping the students that we serve. All money raised from this event goes to support students throughout our network. From basic needs to direct services, your support keeps us in schools, so that we can do whatever it takes to help keep them in school.

*Names have been changed to protect the student's identity.
